Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are part of the fly family and can be just as pesky. In Texas, where the old saying “if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute and it will change” is very true and provides an optimal environment for mosquitoes. One of the benefits of living in Texas is the warmer climate that allows for fantastic fun outdoors. Mosquitoes, however, can put a damper on these plans.
Mosquitoes have a long tube at the front of their heads, which they use to penetrate the skin of animal and human hosts to feed on their blood. Their saliva can cause a harmless itchy rash, but mosquitoes can also transmit dangerous diseases like West Nile and Zika viruses.
If you’ve been outside in the early morning or late afternoon, you’ve probably noticed that mosquitoes tend to become more active during those times. The sun dries them out, so mosquitoes like to hang out in shady spots. That’s why they don’t present such a problem in the middle of the day. If you have a lush yard full of shade trees that protect you from the sun, you might notice that mosquitoes are a problem, especially in the more humid months.
You can mist yourself with bug spray every time you go outside, but the best defense against mosquitoes is treating your property. Mosquitoes can sense the carbon dioxide emitted from a mammal from far away, so protecting your skin doesn’t prevent them from heading in your direction and laying eggs in your yard.
Mosquitoes can lay as many as 100 eggs at a time. Females seek out pools of water, such as mud puddles, birdbaths, rain barrels and drainage plates under potted plants in which they can lay their eggs. When the eggs hatch, the larvae swim in the water, developing into the pupa stage. Within 5 to 14 days, they become adults, and that’s when they become an unwanted party crasher.
The most effective way to control a mosquito problem is to attack the larvae. Using growth regulators and contact insecticides on a property can prevent the mosquitoes from ever reaching adulthood and kills any mosquitoes that are active. At AJB Pest & Termite we use IGR to effectively reduce the number of mosquitoes on your property. As a homeowner, you can help in reducing the mosquito population on your property by removing standing water. This takes away a mosquito’s breeding ground, forcing it to head elsewhere to live and feed. The professionals at AJB Pest & Termite are experts at pest control and mosquito reduction. They know what to look for and how to treat infestations. The specialists at AJB Pest & Termite can also provide preventative measures so you can enjoy the outdoors throughout the year without letting mosquitoes become a problem.
MistAway® Mosquito Misting System
Mistaway® is a revolutionary automatic mosquito misting system that effectively eliminates mosquitoes and other biting insects from your yard. The MistAway® system is designed with a series of misting nozzles that automatically spray a very fine mist of botanical insecticide to eliminate pesky insects. The MistAway® virtually disappears into your landscape and you won’t even know it’s there.
The MistAway® system does not produce ozone, it is vibration free, has easy access filters and doesn’t lose efficiency over time. The automatic mosquito misting control unit is located anywhere that is convenient to a water faucet and electrical outlet.
Does It Really Work?
YES. Studies have confirmed that misting systems are extremely effective. Over the past 15 years, as many as 60,000 mosquito misting and automatic insect control systems have been installed in the U.S. and the MistAway® Mosquito Misting Systems accounts for almost half of that figure.
Is It Safe?
Natural pyrethrin and synthetic permethrin are the two most common formulas used in mosquito misting treatment, and both are commonly found in household aerosols and pet shampoos. Although low in toxicity, we don’t recommend close or frequent direct contact with the mist because inhalation of it can cause some respiratory problems like coughing and wheezing, and skin contact with the mist can cause a rash or itching. When the system is installed we will include a caution sign that warns: “Do not mist in the presence of people, pets, or food.”
There has never been a more effective outdoor mosquito control product than the MistAway® Mosquito Misting System.
